Hole Punch for Paper Grommets

The circles punched are designed for armature bar nipples extending about 13/64” length and the width .140”  You can grind (dremmel tool) your armature bar nipple down to this size if needed. There is no reason why an armature bar nipple should be longer than the above stated size. However, in some cases the nipple is very long but small O-Rings are added to aid in centering the nipple with the needle tube. This is done to lighten the armature bar, usually for an increase in speed. Even though the armature bar is long in these cases, the nipple & grommet doesn’t go past the front center of the tube.

A 13/64 long and .140” wide armature bar nipple is the perfect size! There is no need for nipple overhang, which only causes unnecessary weight and vibrations.

Use only Bounty Paper towels or a high quality equivalent. Bounty paper towels are strong and durable but most important is the fact that they have less lint than most other paper towels. This less lint is key for all tattoo artists! Excess lint can become a nuisance during the tattoo process and can have a negative effect on the healing process.

Cut a piece of Bounty paper towel in half , then fold this piece, so that is remains long. Next, place the paper towel in puncher and pull on both sides of the paper towel with one hand by grabbing both ends of the paper towel underneath the puncher. Make sure the paper towel is taught, so that the puncher can make a clean cut. * The key is having firm and tight paper towel inside the punch so that is can make clean cuts, with practice you will have perfect circles to use as paper grommets. Place circular paper towel cut-out over nipple and insert needle bar over circular paper towel cut-out, then press into the Armature Bar.

You can determine the level of snugness on A-Bars by layering pieces of the circular cut-out until the right fit is created. If too tight your needles will jump around in the tube, if too loose your color won’t come out solid. You need to experiment and find the right amount of snugness for all your grommets on armature nipples and duplicate that snugness on all your machines. I prefer my grommets to be at medium snugness, just enough to pull out the needle bar from the armature nipple without to much pull. EXPERIMENT and get this part right, its very important for excellent tattooing.

Additionally, you can create baggies of paper towel grommets, so that there ready for use during your tattoo procedure, instead of punching them out while tattooing.
